About this data
<p>This dataset provides indicators on deaths and mortality rates, in large regions (TL2) and small regions (TL3).</p> <p><strong>Data definition and source</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Deaths by 5-year age group</strong> are reported according to the last place of residence of the deceased person.</li> <li><strong>Crude death rate</strong> is the number of deaths per 1 000 population.</li> <li><strong>Age-adjusted mortality rates</strong> eliminate the difference in mortality rates due to a population’s age profile and are comparable across countries and regions. Age-adjusted mortality rates are calculd by applying the age-specific death rates of one region to the age distribution of a standard population. Here, the standard population is represented by the OECD area population in 2010, and the adjusted mortality rate is based on deaths in five-year age groups.</li> </ul> <p>Data is collected from Eurostat (reg_dem) for EU countries and via delegates of the OECD Working Party on Territorial Indicators (WPTI), as well as from national statistical offices' websites.</p> <p><strong>Definition of regions</strong></p> <p>Regions are subnational units below national boundaries. OECD countries have two regional levels: large regions (territorial level 2 or TL2) and small regions (territorial level 3 or TL3). Metropolitan regions combine TL3 regions when 50% or more of the regional population live in a functionnal urban areas above 250 000 inhabitants.
